Hi,

my older PC configuration (I've upgraded BIOS and RAM):
AMD Athlon X2 5000+
ASUS M2A-VM HDMI BIOS rev. 2302
8GB 800MHz DDR2 (4x 2GB)
PCIe nVidia GF 430GT

I've installed Gentoo from newest x64 minimal install CD (it started and installed flawlessly).

Kernel: 3.18.12

But after reboot I get kernel panic, reboot or hang on this:

Code:
Populating /dev with existing devices through uevents ...
BUG: unable to handle kernel paging request at 000000002f02d900
IP: [<ffffffff81189e3c>] kmem_cache_alloc+0x2c/0x120

I'd like to have it working but I know some live dists refused to run on this system from unknown reasons.

Maybe just kernel config misconfiguration.

Hi, thank you for reply. I ran memtest after memory installation and now but it didn't get any error.
Since I thought it must be something with SMP, I've tried to run memtest in SMP mode but it everytime run only on one core.
So I can't test SMP in memtest.

Tried to remove 2 of 4 RAM modules and Gentoo started flawlessly. So it seems I'll go with 4 GB of RAM only.

before you trash your ram, make sure to read your manual, asus manual have nearly always ram modules combo or validity in it.
so even if your ram doesn't work with your computer, it might not be because the ram are bad, just not compatible with your m/b or other modules.
