Hi!

I just updated my system with latest snapshot and in the process also updated my kernel from 3.18.12 to 4.0.5. I used genkernel to install the kernel, also recompiled xorg-server and nvidia-drivers. Now whenever I start X server (via init script or startx), I get kernel panic.

So far I have disabled xdm init script and so I have a console. Please let me what information is required for debugging this through, and if there is a way to get kernel panic dump if required).

see https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1020106.html
However a kernel panic is not typical of this problem. A digital camera or cell phone picture of the panic screen posted on a photo site would be interesting. A pastebin of /var/log/Xorg.0.log is the best start to X trouble shooting.

Ah! Thanks for the help. I found the problem - nouveau was selected under Direct Rendering Manager in kernel options. I found the error looking into the dmesg for posting it in here. nvidia driver was complaining that it couldn't be loaded as some other driver is already present...

Compiling kernel without nouveau (but with DRM) resolved the issue.
