I understand that stage 1 tarballs are not supported any more (and aren't even available for down load).

If I am understanding things correctly, a stage 1 x86 tarball can be used to bootstrap a 64 bit amd64 system since gcc can be configured to output a 64 bit binary.

Am I misunderstanding the way things work?

As long as you have the right gcc that can generate 64-bit binaries.

Why go through that much trouble? Simply install the stage3 and then use emerge -e @system as soon as you reboot. It will give you the same results without the pain improvising a LFS install.

yee,

A 64 bit gcc is required but not suffcient. You need a complete suitable toolchain. Further, you must switch all the toolchain components at the same time, so its harder than you make out.

You can follow the stage one process starting from a stage3 tarball as the stage1 script is provided in the stage3 tarball.
