Hi there I've installed Gentoo and restarted but I restart to the tty.
My file system is mounted as read only but in the fstab I have rw,noatime, data=ordered 0 1

Just can't work out how to fix it

try to mount it manually and read the errormsg (eg. "Couldn't mount because of unspported optional features".)
i've had this problem and the reason was that i had created the filesystem with different (default) features than those supported by my system (and those in /etc/mke2fs.conf) ; eg i created an ext4-fs from a rescue-system and it had -O HUGE_FILE. in this case you can boot a rescue-system and change the features with tune2fs.

GOOD LUCK!
