I just finished my first Gentoo install and rebooted. I'm taken to GRUB2 and try to boot, it returns
Code:
error: you need to load the kernel first

I tried
Code:
kernel /vmlinuz

but it could not find the command kernel. I honestly have no idea what to do at this point, please help.

Well grub2 isn't able to find the compiled kernel at /vmlinuz so where did you put it? Is it for instance in /boot and maybe under another name? Or perhaps you forgot to compile a kernel at all?

A common problem is also not having /boot mounted (if separate) during kernel compilation.

I eventually was able to load the kernel and boot, but when I tried to, I got a kernel panic error that read
Code:
VFS: Cannot open root device "(null)" or unknown-block(0,0): error -6 please append a correct "root=" boot option;

You may need to load initrd depending on your kernel configuration.

check your lspci and than configure your kernel accordingly.

Also add support for your root file system too in your kernel.

you probably should post

Code:
lspci

Code:
lshw

kernel config

grub config

so others can check them out. also use a pastebin so its easier to read (pastebin are webservices which can host textfiles and gives you an link to access them)

---

Guessing on your error message is that your kernel loads but the hardware or the file system is not recognized. could be not connected harddisc (missing data cable / power cable) / missing driver => not correct kernel config ... / no support for your filesystem (e.g. using xfs but not enabling xfs in kernel)

you may also try to use a genkernel script kernel.

or boot up a livecd and check which modules are loaded with
Code:
lsmod
and check if you have those modules in your kernel.

or use a kernel seed from someone
