Hi everyone,

I am trying to setup a server to install Gentoo from the network using the instructions on the Wiki at the following URL: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Installation_alternatives#Diskless_install_using_PXE_and_kernel.2Finitrd.2Fsquashfs_from_the_LiveCD

My dhcpd server is setup properly and serving the requested information to the client. The tftp server seems properly setup as well, however I am running into a single item in reverse video when booting saying: Welcome to GRUB! and nothing else.

From a Wireshark trace I can see the client is requesting files: boot/grub/i386-pc/core.0 then /boot/grub/i386-pc/normal.mod.

Both files exist on the tftp server.

After both files were requested nothing happens, no more requests on the tftp port neither any sign of activity on the client. Where the Welcome to GRUB! is coming from? I have no such banner in the grub.conf file where the single menu entry has Gentoo Live as its label.

Anyone has made it working? Anyone is maintaining these instructions? What about the patch in the script provided to setup the server's directory? Is it current?

EDIT: More details on what is going on. The first file ie entirely sent and received, while the second is only partially received. At some point, the tftp server is resending the same packet over and over and the client is not acknowledging it. This doesn't happen always on the same packet number.

Here is the URL to a screenshot of a Wireshark session. The address 10.1.1.7 is the server and 10.1.1.16 is the client I am trying to boot. We can see it stops while recovering the file normal.

Screenshot from Wireshark session

Anyone succeeded booting from the network with Grub2?
