In Thunar 1.6.10, XFCE 4.12, I experience a lot of lockups in Thunar when navigating directories. Entering some directory will in many cases freeze the whole GUI. The buttons also appear unresponsive, but I can sometimes (but not always, it seems) go up one directory using the button for this, hit F5, and the window will repaint again.

This has been an issue over many months, many world emerges. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it due to a specific use flag combination? What is the problem?

These are my flags:

Code:

 * Found these USE flags for xfce-base/thunar-1.6.10:
 U I
+ + dbus               : Enable dbus support for anything that needs it (gpsd, gnomemeeting, etc)
 - - debug              : Enable extra debug codepaths, like asserts and extra output. If you want to get meaningful backtraces see https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Quality_Assurance/Backtraces
+ + exif               : Add support for reading EXIF headers from JPEG and TIFF images
+ + libnotify          : Enable desktop notification support
+ + pcre               : Add support for Perl Compatible Regular Expressions
 - - test               : Workaround to pull in packages needed to run with FEATURES=test. Portage-2.1.2 handles this internally, so don't set it in make.conf/package.use anymore
+ + udisks             : Enable storage management support (automounting, volume monitoring, etc)
 + - xfce_plugins_trash : Build thunar-tpa (trash) plugin for panel

anything in dmesg or /var/log/messages?

could be file system / inode / harddrive issue also (ssd work wonders for such thingsd when you use old rotating discs)...

did you check smart of your drives (regardless if those smart values do matter in teh first place, no guarantee that the drive will fail wiht good smart values ... my opinion ..)

There is nothing in dmesg. There are no smart errors for any drives, nor are there ever any I/O errors in dmesg, nor do I have any network device that gets disconnected and causes it to hang.

No idea if this will yield anything but you may try it ...

well fire up a console and you may run this and see if you get something useful

I remembered in the old gnome2 days the dbus was sometimes a bit weird and responsible for such lags, ...
