Hello,

I'm trying a new install (AMD64) and have successfully compiled the kernel and the modules. Since /usr and /var are on different partitions, I wanted to create an initramfs. Unfortunately, this fails with the message "Could not create empty cpio at /var/tmp/genkernel/initramfs-4.0.5-gentoo.
Here are the wgetpaste-links of "genkernel initramfs", "free -m" and "ls -la /usr/share/genkernel": https://bpaste.net/show/bb4b95b4d38e / 5f366d85a2ac / 41c6129b9a60 . Any ideas?

Did you run out of disk space or inodes on /var/tmp ? What kind of filesystem is /var/tmp/ ?

Sorry I'm not an expert on genkernel, just throwing out random guesses at what's going on...

I see:
Code:
grep -i blk_dev_ram /usr/src/linux/.config
Quote:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM_COUNT=16
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_RAM_SIZE=8192
Code:
grep -i blk_dev_initrd /usr/src/linux/.config
Quote:
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_INITRD=y
Code:
grep -i initramfs /usr/src/linux/.config
Quote:
CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE=""
your separately generated kernel may not suooort initrd/initramfs in menuconfig:
Quote:
General setup --->
[*] Initial RAM filesystem and RAM disk (initramfs/initrd) support
() Initramfs source file(s)
[*] Support initial ramdisks compressed using gzip
[ ] Support initial ramdisks compressed using bzip2
[ ] Support initial ramdisks compressed using LZMA
[*] Support initial ramdisks compressed using XZ
[ ] Support initial ramdisks compressed using LZO
[*] Support initial ramdisks compressed using LZ4
[*] Optimize for size

Device Drivers --->
[*] Block devices --->
<*> RAM block device support
Default number of RAM disks
(8192) Default RAM disk size (kbytes)

Easier format for the reader would be:
genkernel initramfs https://bpaste.net/show/bb4b95b4d38e
free -m https://bpaste.net/show/5f366d85a2ac
ls -la /usr/share/genkernel https://bpaste.net/show/41c6129b9a60
or the more elegant
genkernel initramfs produced by
Code:
[url=https://bpaste.net/show/bb4b95b4d38e]genkernel initramfs [/url]

Quote:
ERROR: Could not create empty cpio at /var/tmp/genkernel/initramfs-4.0.5-gentoo
would make the output of
Code:
ls -al /var/tmp/genkernel/initramfs-4.0.5-gentoo
interesting
the output of
Code:
emerge -s genkernel
would tell which genkernel version is in use.

Thanks four your answers! The culprit was indeed the inode issue. I had produced more inodes on other small partitions, but failed to do so on \var (4 GB). I'll also check the consistency of my configuration.
