Hello everyone! This is my first post here so if I have any mistakes please do tell.

So I want to install Gentoo for the first time on my desktop but I found a have a big problem with USE flags. Coming from Arch I never used USE flags (did a little editing of pkg CFLAGS -march=native). I have installed Gentoo on VirtualBox but with default /portage/make.conf. What I want to know which flags I need for an Openbox? I know I could disable "-gtk -gnome -kde -qt4..." and so on, but what are needed for Openbox and a standard system?

I have read on Gentoo wiki what USE flags I need for it, but what else?

Example should I add "jpeg mp3 mp4 ffmepg" and so on?

Sorry if this seems a little confusing, english isn't my native language.

BTW is it still possible to use gpt on BIOS with grub2? I know the method, I am just asking is it doable still?

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forums!

You can choose desktop profile, it will give you good default USE flags.
Or you can use plain 13.0 profile and add use flags as you build your system. Always do emerge -av foo and review the flags before proceeding.
With Openbox you need gtk flag for at least some packages, although you can have it disabled globally.

There is no restriction to have GPT with BIOS, unless your BIOS is broken. Then you may need to set the boot flag in MBR mode before you can boot from GPT disk.

Thanks! So if choose desktop profile (3 if I remember correctly) I already have a nice list, great. So then I only need to disable kde and qt4-5. I will enable gtk support, thanks for that.
As for gpt with BIOS everything is fine :D.
I just started reading USE flags for local use (per package, right) so that I have at least a basic idea. Btw a quick question, if I compile my own kernel, do I need to manually configure it each time it update it's or it's just saved in .conf file? I had checked that in when I was compiling it on VirtualBox.

Sorry if it's a stupid question.

You can copy over your .config from kernel source directory and run make oldconfig. See README file in kernel source directory for make targets.
