I'm not able to get the latest sysresccd to boot from a USB 3.0 stick but it works fine from a USB 2.0 stick. Has anyone else run into this? Is there another rescue distro I should consider for USB?

Off of the same USB port?

Come to speak of it I tried to make a bootable USB3 flash memory stick and it also does not boot. I never rootcaused it, but it could also have been firmware of the PC, though I attributed the problem to the memory stick when I gave up. Not sure what else caused me to come to that conclusion...

grant123,

I have SystemRescueCD on a 64G USB3 stick. It works on USB2 ports.
I'm not sure I ever tested it on a USB3 port though.

I know my USB3 stick doesn't work on a USB3 port, but I don't think my particular USB3 stick boots on a USB2 port either, last I remember it never gets to booting the kernel...or even running GRUB.
Need to try it again, I attributed this to a crappy USB3 stick as I have a USB2 stick that I can write faster upon. Reads I didn't check, alas it did negotiate a USB3 link to XHCI when plugged into a booted system.

eccerr0r, yes this is in the same USB 2.0 port and my firmware is the latest.

NeddySeagoon, have you tried a new-ish sysresccd?

Naib, I read that too but I can't imagine why.

Should I migrate away from sysresccd? I'd like to stick with USB 3.0.

Works fine for me (USB3 stick, USB3 port). I'm booting it with grub2, haven't tried "directly" since I have many ISO on that stick.

Code:

    submenu "SystemRescueCD >" {
        menuentry "SystemRescueCD 4.5.4 amd64" {
            set isofile="systemrescuecd-x86-4.5.4.iso"
            loopback loop (hd0,msdos3)/$isofile
            linux (loop)/isolinux/rescue64 isoloop=$isofile
            initrd (loop)/isolinux/initram.igz
        }
        menuentry "SystemRescueCD 4.5.4 i586" {
            set isofile="systemrescuecd-x86-4.5.4.iso"
            loopback loop (hd0,msdos3)/$isofile
            linux (loop)/isolinux/rescue32 isoloop=$isofile
            initrd (loop)/isolinux/initram.igz
        }

frostschutz, is hd0 your USB device? Can you try a USB 3.0 stick in a 2.0 port?
