Greetings,

I have a seagate ST3000DM001-1CH166 3TB drive for backups which I've got about 2 years and 3 months ago.
I've connected it via a special external bay (it has a dedicated fan) and I connect it via esata to the server.

lately I saw issues with the esata so I've connected it via usb2 and I see the same issues.
I've ran smartctl -H /dev/sdg on it and got this:
Code:
smartctl 6.4 2015-06-04 r4109 [x86_64-linux-4.1.5-gentoo] (local build)
Copyright (C) 2002-15, Bruce Allen, Christian Franke, www.smartmontools.org

=== START OF READ SMART DATA SECTION ===
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: PASSED
Please note the following marginal Attributes:
ID# ATTRIBUTE_NAME          FLAG     VALUE WORST THRESH TYPE      UPDATED  WHEN_FAILED RAW_VALUE
184 End-to-End_Error        0x0032   090   090   099    Old_age   Always   FAILING_NOW 10

does this means I need to go and shop for a new hdd?

DaggyStyle,

That says that the SMART data thinks the drive is about to fail.
Its all internal to the drive, so that pretty much rules out the data cable.

I see, I'm running self test to get more info, incase that is indeed the issue, by any chance can you recommend a reliable 3tb hdd for backup?

DaggyStyle,

I like my HGST 4G USB3 Touro. I've never tried it on USB2.
