Hey all,

When I try to run alsamixer, I am told 'This sound device does not have any controls.' 'aplay -l' reports no devices, so I figure it must be something I need to enable in my kernel. lspci tells me the following about my sound card (full output here):
Code:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 04)
   Subsystem: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd. [MSI] 7 Series/C210 Series Chipset Family High Definition Audio Controller
   Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 27
   Memory at f7410000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
   Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
   Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable+ Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
   Capabilities: [70] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
   Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel
   Capabilities: [130] Root Complex Link
   Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel

And this is the result of 'cat /proc/asound/cards':
Code:
 0 [PCH            ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
                      HDA Intel PCH at 0xf7410000 irq 27

And finally, two codec files in /proc/asound/card0/ - codec#0 and codec#3. From the first file, I gathered that my sound card is a Realtek ALC892. But it looks like I have the necessary drivers enabled in my kernel - what gives?
Code:
#
# HD-Audio
#

What other files are there in /proc/asound/card0/ ?

Also, what's the rest of CONFIG_SND_* values ?

Besides the two codec files, there is an 'id' file and an 'oss_mixer' file. Here is the id file:
Code:
PCH

And the oss_mixer file:
Code:
VOLUME "" 0
BASS "" 0
TREBLE "" 0
SYNTH "" 0
PCM "" 0
SPEAKER "" 0
LINE "" 0
MIC "" 0
CD "" 0
IMIX "" 0
ALTPCM "" 0
RECLEV "" 0
IGAIN "" 0
OGAIN "" 0
LINE1 "" 0
LINE2 "" 0
LINE3 "" 0
DIGITAL1 "" 0
DIGITAL2 "" 0
DIGITAL3 "" 0
PHONEIN "" 0
PHONEOUT "" 0
VIDEO "" 0
RADIO "" 0
MONITOR "" 0

And here are the other CONFIG_SND_* values:
Code:
CONFIG_SND=y
CONFIG_SND_TIMER=y
CONFIG_SND_PCM=y
CONFIG_SND_HWDEP=y
CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI=y
CONFIG_SND_JACK=y

You should avoid having buildin two options aiming the same card ; while it can works with module, game might be different if the two are loaded in the kernel, who will handle the card then (roll a dice).
Personnally i have everything set as module, but in your case, at least set CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_GENERIC as module as it might handle the card when CONFIG_SND_HDA_CODEC_REALTEK could had done the job but cannot since GENERIC has grab it. (but you should just set everything as module and let the system do its job for you).

You can prefectly live happy also with # CONFIG_SND_SUPPORT_OLD_API is not set.
(could luck, i know it hurt to have no sound)

Hey krinn, thanks for your help. I've done as you suggested and I now have sound on my machine. :)
