I found the following hardware groups in my /etc/group:
tty, disk, lp, mem, kmem, floppy, console, audio, cdrom, tape, video, cdrw, usb, input, plugdev, kvm.

I know what they are used for, but should I (as a normal user) be in any of them?

For example: I should not join the audio group since I'm using pulseaudio.

Currently I'm sure that I should join:
1. kvm: so that I can use the qemu kvm acceleration

That depends, do you trust the user and what do you want to do? Technically they just need to be in their own group, but that user won't be able to do much. My user is in lp wheel audio cdrom video users portage plugdev lpadmin kvm games scanner vmware <user> and I trust myself. My untrused user for poking around the web is simply audio video browser

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.
