i have a surface pro 3 and i want to be able to run gentoo on it, but i dont want to mess with the partitions and boot/refind since i am not the only one using it.

i ran ubuntu already using a usb (no persistence though) but i want to run gentoo because i am very familiar with it.

any tips on how to boot from the usb? i downloaded the livedvd and put it on a usb but it won't boot (already disabled secure boot). everytime i burn the livedvd or minimal install iso on the usb (tried dd, rufus, LiLi) the surface p3 wont boot from it.

i am using a usb hub and my idea was to boot from one usb and install on the other one, no luck so far. is it possible to run gentoo from a "live" usb with persistence? other wise it wouldnt make any sense.

i already checked this guides:

For the livedvd in order to take advantage of the persistence feature you would need to create an extra partition after you have dd the iso unto the usb stick assuming you still have space left on usb stick, then after booting it you would pass it the aufs=/dev/sdb4 (if sdb4 is the writable partition you created after dd) which would mount a writable unionfs on top of the read-only livedvd environment.

What issues are you having when booting the usb stick? Do you get boot option to allow selection of the usb drive?
