I got this brand-new Ethernet card LogiLink PC0012, and 'lspci -v' says
Quote:
01:0a.0 Ethernet Controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8149 (rev 10)
Subsystem: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. Device 8149
Problem is: the output does not say anything about the driver. NOTHING. According to the specs, the chipset is RTL 8169SC. So, I compiled r8169 into the kernel, but the card still does NOT work, despite that its indicator lights up when I plug in the cable. No network interface gets created, too. lspci -n returns
Quote:
01:0a.0 0200: 10ec:8149 (rev 10)
Do you guys think the card might be damaged in some subtle way? I don't know what to make of this. Any advice?

Many thanks.

Did you check dmesg for that device?
Code:
$ dmesg | grep -i 01:0a.0

you may make a new kernel and check the general section about safe memory areas. please read every kernel option and adapt it accordingly.

You may also try with a newer kernel, or newest.... or different kernel versions...

tw04l124,

I run kernel v.4.0.5, and this is a fresh installation. The computer, however, is about 10 years old. Where in menuconfig should I be looking for these safe memory areas? Maybe give an example?

Does this look like the network card is defective?

This is crazy. I've NEVER seen anything similar before.

UPDATE (9/14): gave up and asked for my money back. I guess, once it's broken, it's broken.
