I have a strange problem with one of two laptops I have recently built with MATE, systemd and lightdm.

One is an Asus 1000HE netbook I built within the past couple of weeks using Gentoo x86 and everything works fine.

The other is a Lenovo Y500 laptop that I originally built a couple of months ago with Gnome 3, Cinnamon and GDM but yesterday I installed MATE on it. I originally launched MATE as a session from GDM, it worked and let me configure it fine, I then emerged lightdm, switched off GDM and checked I could log into MATE from lightdm, that also worked fine and I could make changes as normal to the desktop.

At that point, I unmerged gnome and cinnamon, did another emerge world and everything seemed fine. However, now when I make changes to the MATE desktop in Appearance Preferences, the updates are not applied immediately but only when I have logged out and back in again - that's the case whether I change the theme, Window borders or icons. If I change the desktop background, that does change immediately.

I compared make.conf between both laptops, all USE flags that can possibly be matched between the two are matched, I did an emerge -vuDN world after changing the flags. But the theme changes still only appear on next login.

It's not a big issue because I have the desktop looking the way I want to now and rarely change it, but just seems mysterious.

Oh, one other probably irrelevant difference, the Asus boots from a standard hard disk, the Lenovo boots from an SSD.

Any ideas, anyone?

Oh, in case of some legacy config remaining from Gnome or Cinnamon, I created a completely new user after clearing off Gnome 3 and Cinnamon fully, that had the same problem with the themes not updating until next login.
