After configuring everything I took the LiveDVD
out of my new tower and tried to reboot. My
fledgling system fell on it's nose. Grub2 read
the contents of /boot/grub/grub.cfg. When I pressed
the selection, a blank screen came up. What to do? Put
the LiveDVD back in the machine mount the drives,
and check again.

However

When I issued the command

>mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo

I got

>mount: wrong fs tytpe, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda4
missing codepage or helper program or other error
.
.
(look at dmesg|tail)

This is upsetting. After all, almost all of the configuraton
goes there. Are my efforts down the drain? Do I have to
start all over again?

Did a search, and discovered smartctl. Issued

>smartctl -a /dev/sda
.
.
>device has SMART capability
>SMART disabled

Issued:

>smartctl -s'on' /dev/sda
.
.
>SMART enabled

Reissued:
>smartctl -a /dev/sda
and got a lot of details.
To summarize
.
.
>No errors logged

Just to be sure. I issued

>fsck /dev/sda4
.
.
>filesystem is clean

At this point I reasoned that surly /dev/sda4 would mount in the face of
all this scrutiny, and sure enough.

>mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo
returns no errors

I tried to boot a 2nd time and got the same problem,
and fixed it in the same way. Discovered my fastab
was wrong, but that's another story.

>fsck /dev/sda4

smartctl has no effect
