Hi all,

I moved my hard drive on to my new computer and was hoping that it would boot up as usual, but I got otherwise. I got a kernel panic saying that /dev/sda3 could not be found. Please help me on this.

Hi,

the moved hard drive can have an other device file name than sda, specially if there is an other hard drive in the new computer. The moved one may be sdb or have an higher letter. If the kernel have the parameter root=/dev/sda3 and it is in fact /dev/sdb3 on the new computer, there will be a kernel panic because Linux can't find it's root files system where it is.

You need to pass the root=/dev/sdb3 parameter to the kernel or any other place where is the Gentoo root files system to resolv this problem and ajust too the /etc/fstab file to the new situation. Note that if the kernel do not have what it need to boot on the new computer, you will have other problems.

You need to build a kernel for the new box. also check your partition table and your bootloader parameters

For sure the hdd controller is different and a few other things. or use a genkernel kernel

you may downloand systemrescuecd and burn it to a disc. than chroot from that into your box and build the kernel than (assuming the architecture is compatible)

Code:
eix systemresc
[I] app-admin/systemrescuecd-x86
     Available versions:
     (4.4.1) (~)4.4.1^m
     (4.5.0) (~)4.5.0^m
     (4.5.1) (~)4.5.1^m
     (4.5.2) (~)4.5.2^m
     (4.5.3) (~)4.5.3^m
     (4.5.4) (~)4.5.4^m
     (4.6.0) (~)4.6.0^m
     Installed versions:  4.6.0(4.6.0)^m(14:45:55 03.10.2015)
     Homepage:            http://www.sysresccd.org/
Description:         The .iso image of SystemRescueCD rescue disk, x86 (+ amd64) variant

I've recompiled the kernel but I still get the kernel panic. "VFS: Cannot open root device "sdb3" or unknown-block(0,0)"
