so this is my make conf. this is what was installed in the portage directory.

i only added the native to cflags line and then added the makeopts line

Code:
# These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically
# built this stage.
# Please consult /usr/share/portage/config/make.conf.example for a more
# detailed example.
CFLAGS=native -O2 -pipe"
CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS}"
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing.
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
# These are the USE flags that were used in addition to what is provided by the
# profile used for building.
 USE="bindist mmx sse sse2"
PORTDIR="/usr/portage"
DISTDIR="${PORTDIR}/distfiles"
PKGDIR="${PORTDIR}/packages"
MAKEOPTS="-j3"

after chrooting into the system i ran the required
Quote:
emerge-webrsync

and then i got this output

Code:
 $ emerge-webrsync
"/etc/portage/make.conf", line 12: Invalid token '-pipe
CXXFLAGS=${CFLAGS}
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing.
CHOST=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
# These are the USE flags that were used in addition to what is provided by the
# profile used for building.
 USE=bindist' (not '=')
"/etc/portage/make.conf", line 12: Invalid token '-pipe
CXXFLAGS=${CFLAGS}
# WARNING: Changing your CHOST is not something that should be done lightly.
# Please consult http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/change-chost.xml before changing.
CHOST=x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
# These are the USE flags that were used in addition to what is provided by the
# profile used for building.
 USE=bindist' (not '=')

What should i now do? Im guessing deleting these five lines?

Code:
HOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
USE="bindist mmx sse sse2"
PORTDIR="/usr/portage"
DISTDIR="${PORTDIR}/distfiles"
PKGDIR="${PORTDIR}/packages"

what say you oh sages of the gentoo? 8O [/code]

You lost something on the CFLAGS line, I think it probably used to say:
Code:
CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe"

Make sure you have all of the quotes (").

do i need that to build xorg?

I got the base install finished according to the instructions now i'm on to xorg and im confused. the install instructions for xorg kernel mods send me to the raedon (R600_me. something) and then the instructions for xorg tell me that all that stuff is depracted.

Code:
MK_FW   firmware/R600_me.bin.gen.S
make[1]: *** No rule to make target '/lib/firmware/R600_me.bin', needed by 'firmware/R600_me.bin.gen.o'.  Stop.
Makefile:947: recipe for target 'firmware' failed
make: *** [firmware] Error 2

So do i need to stop the build for xorg and raedon to fix this issue with make.conf?

ive seen that announcement but there are like 20 some in the list and im feeling overwhelmed by what i am currently focused on.
