so while in the chroot i input the above command into the console

this is the onscreen output

Code:
emerge --ask sys-kernel/gentoo-sources

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  N     ] sys-devel/bc-1.06.95-r1  USE="readline -libedit -static"
[ebuild  N     ] sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-4.0.9  USE="-build -deblob -experimental -symlink"

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]

that seems to be the significant line in the configure phase of the build

where does this -V come from? does it come from the use flags below or somewhere else? do i need all these USEs?

Hi lizzi and welcome to Gentoo :)

This failure is expected, looking at the config.log there is a second gcc test which fails:
Code:
gcc version 4.9.3 (Gentoo 4.9.3 p1.3, pie-0.6.3)
configure:2103: $? = 0

configure: failed program was:

It seems to be the "native" opt which is causing troubles; afaik, it should be "-march=native"... can you check the CFLAGS settings in /etc/portage/make.conf?

Regards

Hello and thanks! I welcome you as well to my little typo errors as well. It's 8:30 and it seems i should def do something else.

i have the following

CFLAGS="native -O2 -pipe"

the gentoo instructions say i should ahve

CFLAGS="-march=native -O2 -pipe"

its hard to see these fonts sometimes. and with that it will rest here at least overnight while i restore my fatigued mind.
