If its of interest to anyone with an IBM LTO-4 tape drive with Gentoo, I have managed to get the official IBMTape driver to compile and work without error so far on Kernel 3.18.15.

Heres the information of what I did:

IBM Linux Tape driver: lin_tape-3.0.1-1.src.rpm and lin_taped-3.0.1-sles11-x84_64.rpm are what I used.

In the lin_tap_scsi_config.c file change all values of "0666" to "0660" in the entire file, save changes and type "make" to compile. Make sure you either compile support for scsi tapes (st module) in the kernel as a module or remove it so the drivers do not conflict.
