I recently upgraded my kernel from 3.16.5-gentoo to 4.1.12-gentoo. It seems to work fine and it boots up the login manager. I can login and use XFCE with no problems. When I switch to the console by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 a kernel panic occurs. I do not know how to find the log so I cannot post the message on the screen, but it is something about "kbd_event".

I managed to get to the console without a kernel panic once, but as soon as a key is pressed, the same kernel panic occurs again. So I think it is keyboard related.

Any ideas to what could be wrong? I usually do not have such problems when upgrading my kernel.

Thanks in advance :-)

I have not found a solution yet, so this question is still open. I am unsure how to get the kernel error message. I have read in this thread (https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-823452-start-.html) that the kernel panic is not logged anywhere and I need to set up a serial console in order to capture the panic message with another system. This might take some time for me to do, so hopefully the problem can be solved without this extra work.

As I said before, I am pretty sure that the problem is keyboard related and the kernel panic message also says something about "kbd_event".

If anybody has just the slightest idea to what could be wrong, I will test the idea and see if it solves the problem. I am not expecting a complete solution :-)

Hi,

this panic can come from the change of the driver from Xorg to Linux and Linux to Xorg. When you go from Xorg to character consoles and from character consoles to Xorg, the control of the video card pass from one driver to the other. Is Linux and Xorg modules are in sync together with KMS support? What is the frambuffer in use in the kernel and the Xorg module who drive the video card?

Did you make
Code:
make oldconfig

in the actual kernel version configuration before compile it? Passing from version 3 to version 4 of the Linux kernel mean feature and behavior changes.

Have you last try the magic SysRq keys to see if the kernel respond and the keyboard work before reset the computer?
