Hi All

I'm trying to install Gentoo and something wrong with the locale-gen command, I'm using root of the local system and not of the livecd, thanks for helpers:

Code:

(chroot) livecd / # locale-gen
 * No locales found

I did every step in the handbook such as choosing the timezone before

thanks

I think I missed something with the previous step with that file nano -w /etc/locale.gen which I can't find because I can't generate it

but if I'm running the next step:

Code:

eselect locale list

I'm able to see all the available keyboards language, how should I continue? should I create that file manually ?

thanks

Hi system-a and welcome to Gentoo :)
It's strange you can't find /etc/locale.gen, but you can simply create a new one containing (e.g.) the following:
Code:
en_US ISO-8859-1
it_IT ISO-8859-1

This should be enough to enable en_US and it_IT locales, using ISO-8859-1

Regards

Maybe reading https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Localization/Guide#Generating_specific_locales could be of help for you.

no no that's not the issue, I'm able to see that file on my system
Code:

-rw-r--r--  1 root root   875 Sep 24 06:38 locale.gen

but I can't see whats inside him:
Code:

nano -w /etc/locale.gen
== empty file

Find that file as provided by the ebuild:
Quote:
$ cd /usr/portage/sys-libs/glibc
$ ebuild glibc-2.21-r1.ebuild unpack
$ cat /var/tmp/portage/sys-libs/glibc-2.21-r1/work/extra/locale/locale.gen

It is mysterious that an empty file should take 875 bytes...
Are you sure that you listed the file in the correct directory?
And cat or less instead of nano displays an empty file as well?
Check whether you really have root permissions (though locale.gen claims to be readable by everybody and /etc is probably, too)
