Hello,

I have a problem with extracting stage3 files during Gentoo installation.
PC specs are - i5-6600 Skylake, AsRock H170-Pro4S, Samsung SSD 850 Pro.

Code:
 # tar xjvpf stage3-[...].tar.bz2

bzip2: Data integrity error when decompressing.
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the `bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover
data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

It was mentioned on the forums a few times, but I have not found an answer.

I tried it from System Rescue, Gentoo DVD and Minimal Install.
I also tried different mirrors.
It is always the same error.

However, the archive does extract on my other Gentoo PC without problems.
So I created a new stage3 archive from the extracted files:

Code:
# tar cvjpf stage3.tar.bz2 *

Then I extracted that stage3 archive on the new PC and it worked.

Is it going to cause any problems?

Question for you. Did you validate one of the provided stage3 checksums and, if so, was it correct? How about on the ISO of the install media?

Yep, I checked the stage3 with sha512sum and it matched.
However, I have not checked the install media, so I will try that.
And I will use a different usb pendrive this time.

I downloaded System Rescue ISO again, validated and copied it onto a new usb stick.
After that everything worked as expected.

Problem solved.
