hey there,
I'm having trouble creating a bootable usb-stick with the livedvd on it.
I used
Code:
dd if=/livedvd.iso of=/dev/sdf bs=8192k

and that worked alright, but booting from it seems not to work. Instead, my system will default back to the boot partition (even though I configure it to boot from usb).

I read this LiveUSB guide, and maybe, the dd option is not enough.
It's probably trivial, but what am I missing?

You should probably switch to legacy boot mode, not UEFI. Also minimal boot CD (and live DVD) doesn't like USB 3.0

If you're using usb3.0 the current livedvd does not support it but the beta at http://releases.gentooligans.com does but currently will only boot through UEFI as syslinux's isolinux has issues which are being fix soon.

thanks for your replies.
I entirely forgot about UEFI and GPT so I disabled the former in my bios.
However, I do get the following error:
Code:
isolinux.bin missing or corrupt

So I believe either the download was corrupt or, as both of you mentioned, it's an incompatibility with usb3.0.
I'll try to dd the beta-iso and see if that works, might take some time though

Edit: Oh my gosh, 2.4 GB slow download AGAIN T.T

If I remember correctly...

Code:
root #cp -r /mnt/cdrom/* /mnt/usb
root #mv /mnt/usb/isolinux/* /mnt/usb
root #mv /mnt/usb/isolinux.cfg /mnt/usb/syslinux.cfg
root #rm -rf /mnt/usb/isolinux*
root #mv /mnt/usb/memtest86 /mnt/usb/memtestroot #cp -r /mnt/cdrom/* /mnt/usb
root #mv /mnt/usb/isolinux/* /mnt/usb
root #mv /mnt/usb/isolinux.cfg /mnt/usb/syslinux.cfg
root #rm -rf /mnt/usb/isolinux*
root #mv /mnt/usb/memtest86 /mnt/usb/memtest

In the documentation is wrong.
Should some of the items above not read:
Code:
/mnt/cdrom

?
It caught me out when following the "official" documentation.

yeah, that part of the guide is wrong. The dd part at the bottom however should work, but somehow, I'm not able to get this done..
So I dd'ed the new iso and after rebooting from stick, my system tells me
Code:
Missing Operating System

I however wanted to use one partition of the usbstick only, so I dd'ed onto /dev/sdf1 which probably doesn't work...
I'll try on /dev/sdf now and see if that works.

lol, so I dd'ed onto /dev/sdf this time only to get the following error after booting from stick:
Code:
Failed to load ldlinux.c32

This file or whatever that is is also not present on my iso, so maybe the download was corrupted after all. I will redownload the image and try again

finally did it.
The original iso works. You just have to dd onto the entire sdX, not only on one partition which sucks...
