I'm trying to install on an EFI system from a memory stick. The LiveCD is EFI capable, but it's too old and does not have drivers for my NIC. The minimal boot ISO does not seem to be EFI capable, hence I tried admincd-amd64-20160121.iso but still I can't seem to boot this using EFI and there is no /sys/firmware/efi and the grub installation will fail.

There is a description here: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Sakaki%27s_EFI_Install_Guide/Creating_and_Booting_the_Minimal-Install_Image_on_USB but this requires Windows. So how do you do an EFI installation of Gentoo from scratch without Windows?

pgu ...

the general advice for all things efi (and similarly with drivers for network cards unavailable on the minimal cd) is to use sysresccd.

best ... khay

Thank you khay. I already tried that (systemrescuecd-x86-4.7.1.iso) but this seem to suffer the same problem as the LiveDVD, .i.e. it does not support my NIC. Even if I modprobe the e1000 driver it does not detect it. lspci -k does not show an associated kernel module and ifconfig -a does not show any devices other than lo.
A recent minimal installation ISO does support it, but it does not support UEFI.

The Arch ISO seem to work fine. I'll try to see if I can get the chroot environment running on Arch and do the grub-install...

It's a bit odd that the minimal ISO does not support UEFI in 2016...

Arch worked. sys/firmware/efi/efivars was there and grub2-install worked:

Code:
(chroot) archiso / # grub2-install --target=x86_64-efi --efi-directory=/boot
Installing for x86_64-efi platform.
Installation finished. No error reported.
