i've built several headless servers the past few months -- using 3.18.9 or 4.1.12 kernels -- and everything has worked as expected. in these builds i've always configured the network adapter, USB & HID drivers as modules. the network module has always loaded at boot time and the USB & HID modules have always loaded when i inserted a usb keyboard or thumbdrive.

however, with my last build this action no longer holds true. now i must manually load the appropriate modules via modprobe or by adding them to /etc/conf.d/modules. the difference between this latest server and the previous servers is the cpu: i'm using an intel now vs. amd in the previous servers; and the kernel: i'm now using a 4.1.15 kernel. i don't see how either of these factors could affect module autoloading.

i'm stumped. am i missing something obvious here?

tia
