in my latest attempt to stagger through an install, ran into a glitch with emerge-webrsync (using http mirror @ terra-byte.com) with a failure suggesting a corrupt tarball for 20160202, with the fall-back to 20160201 reporting the same. The fall-back to 20160131 succeeded. Is this a problem local to terra-byte.com or is the originating source the culprit? (Who should be notified?)

Oops - guess that should be the rsync mirror and I even question that as apparently rsyncs are now through a central rotational system... (in short, noob really has no idea whats going on).

Already done, see bug 573642. Guess it has to do with changes from https://gitweb.gentoo.org/infra/mastermirror-scripts.git/.

If pixz generates corrupt files, why is it even in the tree?
