Greetings Gentoo forum,

After a recent Gentoo upgrade my desktop computer now stalls for a full minute when booting up about the time the kernel mode setting (KMS) kicks in and then will finish booting up with no problem. I have an Intel video chipset.

The recent upgrade I am referring to gave me the following log message concerning udev:

Code:

>>> Messages generated by process 14572 on 2016-01-12 04:47:35 EST for package sys-fs/udev-225:

ERROR: setup
CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER:    should not be set. But it is.
WARN: setup
Please check to make sure these options are set correctly.
Failure to do so may cause unexpected problems.
WARN: postinst

So I found the line in the kernel menuconfig that said "Fallback user-helper invocation for firmware loading" but it will not let me deselect it so I'm guessing it depends on something else to first be deselected but I don't know what that something else is. Furthemore, I'm not even sure this is causing the problem.

Can someone give me a hint to lead me in the right direction?

Sincerely,
Roy

roytheman,

Make friends with wgetpaste and post your dmesg.
Delays like that are typically modules trying to load missing firmware.

Your setup error is harmless.
If you go to CONFIG_FW_LOADER_USER_HELPER in make menuconfig and read the help, it will say Selected by.
Those things need to be off before you can have manual control of the option.

I finally fixed my problem. I just needed to upgrade my kernel (genkernel) to the latest version (4.1.15-gentoo-r1) using my old config file. I was using a fairly old version when I had the problem, probably a year or two old.

All the best (cheers),
Roy
