Your sda4 needs fsck, it is not clean. It may well be the reason kernel is unable to mount it.

Code:
Filesystem features:      ... needs_recovery ...

I performed an fsck (at least I think I did) using
Code:
fsck -V -t ext4 /dev/sda4
and I got the error message "e2fsck: need terminal for interactive repairs". I don't really know what to do with this info to be honest. You can see the whole output here: https://bpaste.net/show/40d5930d2bab

HimTortons,

dumpe2fs:
Filesystem state:         clean
looks good to me.
You have been mounting sda4 to get into your chroot, mount would tell you all about it if there were problems.

-- edit --

Two things. You don't need an initrd to boot as long as you avoid root=UUID=
Comment out the initrd line in grub.cfg, so no initrd is loaded. Maybe that helps?

Pastebin your current kernel .config file.

Neddy,

to my knowledge needs_recovery appears among features only in case of corruption, but I have been wrong before.

Buffoon,

I've been wrong before too.
Code:
$ sudo dumpe2fs /dev/mapper/static-root
dumpe2fs 1.42.13 (17-May-2015)
Filesystem volume name:   <none>
Last mounted on:          /
Filesystem UUID:          cf559dbe-81bb-45b7-bbdd-0bcdc81e066b
Filesystem magic number:  0xEF53
Filesystem revision #:    1 (dynamic)
Filesystem features:      has_journal ext_attr resize_inode dir_index filetype needs_recovery extent flex_bg sparse_super large_file huge_file uninit_bg dir_nlink extra_isize
Filesystem flags:         signed_directory_hash
Default mount options:    user_xattr acl
Filesystem state:         clean
is from my mounted live root.

Its both clean and needs_recovery. It can,t be clean ... it has open files.

Neddy,
I've got the the pastebin you needed. You can find it right here: https://bpaste.net/show/eec41d18f9b2

I also stumbled across something rather interesting. So my grub.cfg was just plain gone for some odd reason. I didn't realise this and I tried to boot into my gentoo system. Once again I got a kernel panic but this time was a faire bit different. While this was definitly just because of the missing grub.cfg it might give some more info on the problem. You can check out the panic message here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6__L3tBBvz7Tk1RSGZvU09DNjg/view?usp=sharing
After this panic message I noticed that my grub.cfg was gone so I generated one with the initrd line commented out but when I tried to boot with it, I just got the same panic message as usually

Your grub.cnf is missing ... this is most likely because you have separate /boot partition and you forgot to mount it before you installed new kernel. If this is the case then you will be still booting your old kernel, what is the build # now, last time it was #2.

HimTortons,

That's a huge improvement. You don't say so but I assume that's without the initrd being loaded?
Just under the
kernel panic wrote:
VFS: Cannot open root device"(null)" ...
we see all of your HDD and their partitions being listed.

Look in your grub.cfg. On the kernel line, there must be no spaces in the
Code:
root=/dev/sda4
Spaces before and after are good but its the spaces that separate one kernel parameter from the next.

The "(null)" is a bit of a hint. Also the
kernel panic wrote:
unknown-block(0,0)

We know that the kernel can see your HDD. but the (0,0) says that it cant.
If the kernel could see your root partition (it can, as its listed) but not read the filesystem, unknown-block(8,4) would be reported.

From the contradiction, I'm inferring that the root= is not getting to the kernel from grub.cfg.

Neddy,
How could this be? I checked and there are no spaces in between "root=/dev/sda4".

And Buffoon,
It can't be because I forgot to mount the boot partition because everything else from that partition was still there. However it doesn't really matter that the grub.cfg was one because I've got it back now and I'm getting the "newer" panic message, meaning we're making progress

HimTortons,

it is possible you didn't mount /boot and installed kernel, so it got installed into /boot directory on root partition, thus you see it there. If you run Grub install again it will be in /boot directory on root partition, too. This will effectively set up your system to ignore boot partition when booting. If this is what happened further modifications on /boot partition will have no effect. But of course, I'm not there watching over your shoulder ...

Buffoon,
While this is a valid concern (that I've taken into consideration as well) I can assure that this is not the case. I've triple checked to be absolutely sure that everything is on the boot partition and not the root partition. When the boot partition isn't mounted, the /boot directory is empty so I'm pretty sure everything is installed correctly

One suggestion. Don't describe what can be shown with one commands output.

As I'm still having doughts about where your files are could you post the
Code:
ls -lR /boot
with and without boot partition mounted.

bstaletic,
I ran the command you asked for.
Here is the output from the boot directory when the boot partition is not mounted:
Code:
# ls -lR /mnt/gentoo/boot/
/mnt/gentoo/boot/:
total 0

And here's the output when it is mounted:
Code:
# ls -lR /mnt/gentoo/boot/

OK, are you attempting EFI stub boot? Or EFI Grub boot? Or MBR boot?

Here is EFI stub setup: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/EFI_stub_kernel

Buffoon,

Now there's a question. EFI stub booting cannot pass parameters to the kernel. The kernel command line must be built in.
(In this case, its not).

The grub.cfg is not being read and no root= is passed to the kernel.
Then we have
Code:
VFS: Cannot open root devic e"(null)" ...
because the kernel command line was blank.

Neddy and Buffoon,
From what it looks like I would say it's probably EFI Stub boot. I just followed the Handbook Article and I would assume it's EFI stub. Is it enough to just build the command line into the kernel and then put the root path into the kernel parameters?

HimTortons,

I don't have EFI to play with but its harmless anyway.
Its a kernel build, just to change the kernel command line.

I just set up my new computer to boot with EFI...

Assuming you set up an EFI partition correctly, you need to set your command line... a quick glance at your .config showed you had the EFI stuff set, but your command line wasn't. You'll want to add:

CONFIG_CMDLINE_BOOL=y
CONFIG_CMDLINE="root=/dev/sda4"

or else root=PARTUUID=your-gpt-partition-uuid-here

Note, using an EFI stub only, you'll only be able to have one kernel available, so if you upgrade your kernel and the new one borks, it's not trivial to get back to the old one. Once you get this working, you might want to look into something like sys-boot/refind

Thanks saellaven that ended up being the solution. Now my Gentoo System is fully functional and able to boot. And yes, I will eventually try out another bootloader (rEFInd was actually what I was thinking of using as that would be something new) but I've just got one last issue: I've got multiple boot entries in my UEFI for my 1TB drive. One of them correctly boots gentoo and the other one boots Systemd-Boot from the installation of Arch Linux that I previously had on this drive and this shouldn't even exist in the first place. This is not a big problem though and I can live with it.

Also thanks to everyone else who helped me with my problem. I greatly appreciate it

Do you have efibootmgr installed? It has a flag designed to remove entries from your efi nvram. Since I'm not using efi I dpn't have it installed and I don't remember the flags I used.

Glad I could help... I've been doing the Linux thing for 20+ years, and the EFI thing even had me perplexed for a couple days (though I had the system up and running without EFI while I worked out the booting via EFI issue).

This is not quite correct and depends on what the UEFI Firmware supports and how everything is set up.

The only bootloader I use is the built in UEFI Firmware boot manager. My ESP can hold several (in theory 10 EFI kernel stubs, but I doubt I could cerate that many boot entries in nvram). I build and install all new testing kernels to the ESP with unique file names ending in .efi. Use efibootmgr to add a boot entry for the new kernel. Reboot the computer, enter the UEFI boot manager and select the kernel I want to boot. If it fails, I reboot again and let the system boot the default working kernel. Easy to have more than one kernel available for booting.

The default location the UEFI Firmware looks is EFI/BOOT/bootx64.efi. The only requirement is, again depending on your Firmware support, what ever you want to boot must end with .efi and the Firmware knows where to find it. I load all my kernels from EFI/gentoo/kernels.efi.

While I don't use any additional bootloaders, GRUB2 and rEFInd should also be more than capable of having several kernel options.

Best..... :)
