http://timetobleed.com/gcc-optimization-flag-makes-your-64bit-binary-fatter-and-slower/

This article is from 2010, anyone can confirm if this bug still happens? I just compiled a full Gentoo on a Atom cpu using this option, damm.
funtoo recomends using it, see: http://www.funtoo.org/Atom_64

Fomit framepointer is a safe cflag and hardly triggers a bug as it is in use of the mayority

I have it in use since my turion 64 mt-32 days, than t9500, now 3610qm processors; and t4300, 4400 cpus.

the other thing is bullshit, as it is just a discussion if an optimization is faster or not.

that is a matter of cpu architecture, which is than a matter of which cpu we are going to compare, the pipeline effect and other cpu internals versus the gcc optimizations and effects. big topic, big bullshit of nooobies demanding that this or that makes things slower.

go ahead and make a relyable, reproduceable benchmark, but the fact should be reproduceable, relyable, scintific proven, and thats not htat easy.

myself i care for

a) bug free box: therefore i use only proven flags, like fomit-frame-pointer, no fun-roll-loops or other madness
b) up to date box
c) as much software and kernel modules as needed, no bloat.

using other gcc flags as the mayority causes random errors which is a pain to deal with. the hassle free way is to stick to the recommendation.

Please do not abuse gentoo forum for funtoo related questions. we are gentoo. funtoo is an unsupported madness crap. Funtoo is loosely based on gentoo. The history has shown that funtoo differs in so many ways that you should ask funtoo guys for funtoo.

When you lack proper knowledge of funtoo internals and generic linux system architecute from scratch you should stay away from funtoo, as it is something experimental.

The funtoo.org page is nothing but rice — -fomit-frame-pointer is enabled by default on x86-64 with any -O.
