Hi,

I'm trying to burn blu-rays in Gentoo using k3b...with little success. Is this working for anyone?

For me the problem is that a couple of minutes after starting the burning process (at 2% or something like that) I get a 254 error from cdrecord. The last lines of the log from k3b are

My burner is the Pioneer BD209 and I'm using Verbatim DL BDs. I tried different options in k3b (speed, multisession...), but it always fails (spoiled already 4 BDs :? )
The funny thing is I can burn DVDs and CDs just fine, so it doesn't look like a hardware problem.

Cheers!!

it's been a long time since i burned the last bluray but this "manual way" worked very well: http://allgood38.io/burn-bluray-data-disks-on-linux-minimize-coasters.html

steps (you need at least 25/50GB free space for your image-file; adjust paths/files as needed; root/su required for some steps):
1. create empty fs:
Code:
truncate -s 25GB BLURAY.udf
mkudffs --vid="My Label" BLURAY.udf

2. loop-mount it:
Code:
losetup -f BLURAY.udf
mount /dev/loop0 /mnt/1

3. copy files into it:
Code:
cp FILES /mnt/1/

4. umount and detach:
Code:
umount /mnt/1
losetup -d /dev/loop0

5. write image with cdrecord; blu-ray-writer is /dev/sr0:
Code:
cdrecord -v -da driveropts=burnfree dev=/dev/sr0 BLURAY.udf

hope this helps.
GOOD LUCK!

Thanks for the thorough tutorial...unfortunately, it didn't work: still the same error :?

I tried a couple more things

- updating the firmware
- burning in Windows with Nero

and still no luck, so I'm beginning to suspect a hardware problem (though it's weird that is able to burn DVDs or CDs without a glitch)

Cheers.

mani001,

How much data were you trying to burn?

I've seen some odd effects when the data set will fit on a single DVD or even a CD.
The system attempts to use the mode for the smaller media regardless of the media type in the drive.
Still, you were able to burn 3G of data before it failed. Using the wrong laser for the media fails immediately.

I was trying to burn about 46GB which, seemingly, is about the maximum that fits in a BD-DL.

Since I'm at my wits end...I have just mailed Pioneer for a solution (or a replacement).

It could be the one bad laser. Optical drives are just not as well made as they used to be imho. To be honest I barely use them anymore but it seems like every time I need to the thing shits the bed and needs to be replaced. I just replaced my laptop drive for the second time and it's only because I was trying to use it for the first time in like a year or two and it wouldn't work.

Right on...I sent it back and ordered a new one (not the exact same model but almost) that I have just received today: it's working just fine (although I only burned one BD so far).. I intended to update this thread today (really :D ) and mark it as solved.

Cheers...and thank you all for your input!!
