What's the problem with my system?

PS: I asked this question in Sabayon forum, but they told me to use their binnery package manager. ^^b

Moved from Portage & Programming to Unsupported Software.

Sabayon is not Gentoo.

There are no errors in your post, just progress messages.
Maybe you are too impatient?

reppk,

Code:
    * ERROR: cannot mknod

It looks like the script that builds your initrd is trying to make a device special file and its not allowed to.

Is the filesystem mounted with the the nodev option?
That would cause it.

As I'm fairly paranoid, my mount shows
Code:
/dev/shm on /var/tmp/portage type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime)

Thank you very much!
Does that mean the /var partition should be mounted with "dev" option?

reppk,

The dev option is the default if you don't give nodev.

Run mount with no options and look at the output for the mount point that holds your build location.
That's /var/tmp/portage unless you have changed it.

I have
Code:
/dev/shm on /var/tmp/portage type tmpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,noatime)
so I build in RAM. This saves lots of writes to my SSD that will never be read.
Notice that I have nodev set. The corresponding /etc/fstab is
Code:
# build in RAM
/dev/shm                                  /var/tmp/portage         tmpfs noatime,nodev,nosuid   0 0

I don't use genkernel but if I tried, the nodev setting would cause the error you are getting.
Its sufficient to drop the nodev from the /etc/fstab, if you have it set, then remount the filesystem to pick up the new settings.

It seems that the problem is not about the nodev option. I didn't see it in /var when I run mount. Thanks anyway. :)

reppk,

Genkernel is a bit of an oddball. It probably does the kernel build in /usr/src/linux, so the object files can be reused.
Check your /usr/ mount options.

I can use genkernel to build kenerl from pf-sourse. Therefore, maybe the problem is from the ebuild's genkenerl setting, I guess....

reppk,

The ebuild fetches the sources and unpacks them into /usr/src/<name>

You point /usr/src/linux at whatever you want genkernel to work on.
Genkernel fetces its kernel config file from somewhere in /etc anh then uses the kernel makefile to make the kernel.

That much works for you.

When that's done, genkernel makes an initrd. It builds all the binaries specially for the initrd. They may not be the some versions installed on your system.

That seems to work too.

The last step is to put it all together in a filesystem. This requires that a few /dev special nodes are created.
This is the bit that fails. Genkernel will do this whatever kernel you build.

Th way forward is to make a kernel that does not need an initrd and install it yourself.
