PostPosted: Sat Apr 09, 2016 2:52 pm    Post subject: Can't build emacs on fresh 64bit install Reply with quote

I'm using the 64-bit install provided by ovh.com. Build info supplied below. The long and short of it is that temacs is being killed. There is nothing in the system log to indicate that the kernel killed it. (Note: I had to shorten the log...to get it to appear below). I don't think it is a resource limitation issue. I'd love to have my good friend emacs back :D ...any help would be appreciated.

David

So nothing in 'dmesg' indicating oomkiller?
How much RAM do you have? What's reported by 'free' ?

Yes, nothing in dmesg or in /var/log/messages. I have 32Gb of memory:

Code:
total        used        free      shared  buff/cache   available
Mem:       32960436      269140    32113592         392      577704    32575064
Swap:       1046520           0     1046520

I tried running in gdb but it simply reports that the process is killed while it was starting.

This is a virtual machine? What hypervisor? Is it a container (i'm not familar with Linux containers...)
Then again 'free' should not report so much empty space in a container? machine... At least I don't see things like that in a BSD jail...

As far as I know I'm running on bare metal. OVH advertises it as a "dedicated server." Not getting much out of dmidecode:

ns526264 ~ # dmidecode -s system-product-name
To be filled by O.E.M.

Maybe VMWare:

ns526264 ~ # dmesg | grep -i virtual
[ 0.875447] PCI-DMA: Intel(R) Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O
[ 2.473222] igbvf: Intel(R) Gigabit Virtual Function Network Driver - version 2.0.2-k
[ 2.475056] VMware vmxnet3 virtual NIC driver - version 1.2.0.0-k-NAPI

but virt-what can't seem to tell either (no output). Doesn't appear to be in a lxc container either:

ns526264 ~ # cat /proc/1/cgroup
11:net_prio:/
10:blkio:/
9:net_cls:/
8:freezer:/
7:devices:/
6:memory:/
5:cpuacct:/
4:cpu:/
3:cpuset:/
2:name=openrc:/

Looks like a PaX-related problem. See https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=497498. A patch was issued but seems to gotten lost...? I'm working on a work-around now.

Looks like the pax_kernel USE flag fixes the problem!

OVH? Is this the Gentoo OVH Release 2? Please uninstall this sh*t and install the official Gentoo.

OVH = not supported because obsolete and badly patched by OVH

Are we sure OVH hasn't corrected the problems reported in 2013? As near as I can tell the only thing "OVH" about this is the kernel config. The problem I reported was due to OVH enabling PAX in their kernels but not including the pax_kernel USE flag in their default config. Seems more like an omission than the widespread "patching" reported previously.
