are you doing this as root? if not try it. ( are you doing this in the virtual environment?{chroot'd into it}) .. you may need a your " virtual disk name" instead of /dev/sda or is that emulated inside the environment?

do you have gentoolkit installed? if so do equery files grub to see if the files are even on the virtual disk and where they are put.

how are you getting in to the virtual environment to install grub etc. ? Are you using an installer/rescuecd ? or some other method .. or are you building the virtual disk outside? to be copied in later? ..

are you booting the livecd inside the virtual environment ..? ..have you tried using a preexisting vmare image? to see if your vmware-player is installed properly ..

.. i'm not sure if vmware-player can be used to " create a new vmware-image i.e. a fresh install " ..

you might try ... this free tool .. http://www.vmware.com/ca/en/products/converter

to convert an existing install into a vmware-image

as per: http://www.howtogeek.com/213145/how-to%C2%A0convert-a-physical-windows-or-linux-pc-to-a-virtual-machine/?PageSpeed=noscript

Did you try grub-install (without the "2" symbol) ? Sometimes, I don't know why, all the grub commands loose the "2" when installed.

Try qlist sys-boot/grub | grep install, then use full path of grub(2)-install.

seems to me as though you missed the first slash. if you were in /root, then trying to run usr/sbin/grub2-install will give exactly that error.
