I’m trying to install Gentoo. Gentoo newbie, coming from Mint, and Fedora before that, with Debian on servers I manage.

Using: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Kernel
Step: Alternative: Using genkernel

I’m trying to setup with systemd due to familiarity with it.

Where I’m failing is: emerge --ask sys-kernel/genkernel-next (which is explained by attempting to emerge genkernel while configured for systemd)

I am using the LiveCD and working in chroot environment, so that I have the ability to copy-pasta from the handbook, or out in case of errors. Unfortunately, I need to use the latter.

make.conf settings of note
CHOST="x86_64-pc-linux-gnu"
USE="X alsa pulseaudio bluetooth systemd"
CFLAGS="-march=amdfam10 -O2 -pipe"
MAKEOPTS="-j5"
arch is correct for cpu, job count is cores + 1 as recommended

Before attempting this again today, I ran:
emerge --sync
emerge --ask --update --deep --newuse @world
emerge --depclean

System is setup for UEFI, I enter chroot with this…
mkdir -p /mnt/gentoo;mount /dev/sda4 /mnt/gentoo;mount /dev/sda2 /mnt/gentoo/boot;mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/gentoo/boot/efi; cd /mnt/gentoo;mount -t proc proc /mnt/gentoo/proc;mount --rbind /sys /mnt/gentoo/sys;mount --make-rslave /mnt/gentoo/sys;mount --rbind /dev /mnt/gentoo/dev;mount --make-rslave /mnt/gentoo/dev;chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash

/etc/fstab for reference, as handbook states must be configured for genkernel, useful lines

Please use code tags to make your postings readable. Anyhow, it seems somewhere there may be OOM killer in action.

Do you really have all these? :roll:
Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="fbdev glint intel mach64 mga nouveau nv r128 radeon savage sis tdfx trident vesa via vmware dummy v4l"

You should install base system and reboot into it before you start installing any additional software.

I haven't touched video cards, as they haven't been in the handbook to touch through to this point. Whatever it is selecting is what it defaults to. I have provided the USE flags I have set, which are not much. If there is a point I am supposed to configure video cards or remove such in the install process, it hasn't been covered to this point. The only package I have emerged into the chroot environment that is not listed in the handbook is vim, as I prefer it to nano, and using genkernel-next rather than genkernel due to the given error message on genkernel that for systemd you must use genkernel-next.

Still working on the base system, with the step I'm at in the handbook, I could try booting into it, however it does not have a kernel nor bootloader configured. I could try to set /efi or /boot as active, however they are both empty. They have not been populated at this step in the handbook.

my /etc/portage/make.conf with comments and blank lines removed

EDIT: Got resolution.

Based on your comment about possible OOM error... tried -jX until -j1 and was able to build without error. I'll bill this off as memory usage due to livecd.

So for anyone else who stumbles into this one based on any keywords present in this thread...

Ignore suggestion of using -j(number of cores + 1) and instead set -j1 and see if it builds, worked for me.
