I finally have my cow in the box. I do still have problems with setting up my screen resolution and want some help.
I have never worked with the open source drivers, so i had to look and read a lot.

I need a resolution of 1440x900, but on every boot the resolution gets reset to 1024x768

lspci:
Code:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Cayman XT [Radeon HD 6970]

My original xrandr:

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DisplayPort-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-1 connected primary 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768      60.00*
   800x600       60.32    56.25
   848x480       60.00
   640x480       59.94

I am able to add the mode for 1440x900 and run it with xrandr, thanks to this thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-916156.html

Now I am trying to set this in my xorg settings, but that does not work. I know this script runs from log report.
My guess is that it will not work because I lose the mode setting.

How can I make this to boot directly into the 1440x900 resolution setting?

Code:
Section "Monitor"
  Identifier  "DVI-1"
  # 1440x900 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 55.92 kHz; pclk: 106.47 MHz

See if this version can solve your problem:

Code:
Section "Monitor"
  Identifier  "DVI-1"
  # 1440x900 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 55.92 kHz; pclk: 106.47 MHz
  Modeline "1440x900_60"  106.47  1440 1520 1672 1904  900 901 904 932  -hsync +vsync
  # Option  "PreferredMode" "1440x900"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Screen0"
        Monitor         "DVI-1"
        DefaultDepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                 Modes "1440x900_60"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Radeon HD 6970"
        Option          "Monitor-DVI-1" "DVI screen"
        Driver          "radeon"
        BusID           "PCI:2:0:0"
EndSection

otherwise, please post /var/log/Xorg.0.log.

No luck.

I do not see the modeline in the Xorg.0.log file. Is the Modeline not stored?
Would I have to run the xrandr script on each boot, or is that the wrong approach?

Here is my Xorg.0.log:

looks as if your config fiile is either not found or something.
where do you keep the monitor and screen section for the Xorg configuration?
as you can see from the logfile the xorg-server would take configuration parameters
from either /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d or /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d.

edit: another config version
Code:
Section "Monitor"
  Identifier  "DVI-1"
  # 1440x900 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 55.92 kHz; pclk: 106.47 MHz
  Modeline "1440x900_60"  106.47  1440 1520 1672 1904  900 901 904 932  -hsync +vsync
  # Option  "PreferredMode" "1440x900"
  # Option "IgnoreEDIDChecksum" "DisplayPort-0"
  Option "ModeDebug" "TRUE"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Radeon HD 6970"
Option          "Monitor-DVI-1" "DVI screen"  # only known driver options in here
        Driver          "radeon"
        BusID           "PCI:2:0:0"
        Option "UseEDID" "False"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Screen0"
        Monitor         "DVI-1"
        Device         "Radeon HD 6970"
        DefaultDepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                 Modes "1440x900_60"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

edit2: again looked at your log file. monitor and device ids seem to come from your
config file. but as you pointed out already, the modeline is completely missing.
maybe a problem with the modeline parameters? haven't used modelines for ages.
could be the UseEDID option solves this problem for you.

No luck with this one either.
In the back of my head I wonder how I can choose a Mode when the Mode is not there.

My conf-file:
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-monitor.conf

i do not have a xorg.conf in X11.

Your edited conf file does also not help the issue. :(
The output in the log shows the EDID values, bur those are the same Modes as in the previous log.

Indeed the Mode is not there, so choosing it as a preferred mode does not make sense. I guess I will set up a bash and run xrandr on startup.

Generally all you can achieve by xrandr should be possible through
config options at xorg-server startup .
I include the option "ModeDebug" in the last version and hoped
that the UseEDID option would allow your modeline.

wonder what this is about. initially log speaks about output on DisplayPort-0
later it mentions DVI-1 connected. which connector are you actually using?
how about renaming you monitor, screen, device ids to "monitor0", "screen0"
and "device0" to make the log easier to read?

My setup is as mentioned in the start of the post

Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 16384 x 16384
DisplayPort-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DisplayPort-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DVI-1 connected primary 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm

The TV/monitor is connected on DVI-1

I saw the EDID in the log and the ModeLines showed the same options. I cannot create the log right now, since I am not behind my box.
I don't know how to change those names. I will see if I can find some reading on that, but a tip is welcome.

Thanks for hanging out with me .. :)

here is an example of what I talked about

Code:
Section "Monitor"
  Identifier  "Monitor0"
  # 1440x900 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 55.92 kHz; pclk: 106.47 MHz
  Modeline "1440x900_60"  106.47  1440 1520 1672 1904  900 901 904 932  -hsync +vsync
  # Option  "PreferredMode" "1440x900"
  Option "ModeDebug" "TRUE"
EndSection

Section "Device"
        Identifier      "Device0"
        Driver          "radeon"
        Option          "DVI-1" "Monitor0"
        BusID           "PCI:2:0:0"
        # Option "UseEDID" "False"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
        Identifier      "Screen0"
        Monitor         "Monitor0"
        Device         "Device0"
        DefaultDepth    24
        SubSection "Display"
                 Modes "1440x900_60"
        EndSubSection
EndSection

hopefully it helps to better understand the log content and/or get a clue
of what is missing to apply your modeline.

Thanks man!

I will give it a go when I am back behind the box.

I also did some upreading on the Xorg configuration and your example helps understand that perfectly.

ftp://www.x.org/pub/X11R6.8.2/doc/xorg.conf.5.html#sect9

I read in the docs that there is a Modes section. I don't know if that has any bearing on the results though. It seems to me doing the same as having it directly in the monitor section.

Code:
Section "Modes"
    Identifier "name"
    entries
    ...
EndSection

I also understand what you tried to point out with reference to DVI-1 and DisplayPort-0.
Quote:
Output DisplayPort-0 using monitor section DVI-1

I think these are bridged and not independent.
Although I can force the resolution with xrandr, it would be nice to have it in xorg

you are welcome, djwave28.
I hope I finally found and covered the spot that was missing in
the example I posted (option "DVI-1" "Monitor0" in device section).
regarding the modes section: modelines are basically a short form
of the modes.

You've named your monitor "DVI-1", that's where that string comes from.

Here is my new log file generated under the configuration as given. I saw you caught the typo

Still no luck though ... aargh! :?

One line caught my eye .. Don't know if that would be important for X to apply that ModeLine.

I also looked up my monitor. It has an HDMI and VGA input. I have the connector between my physical DVI output with an adapter to the monitor VGA input, which make me wonder about that DisplayPort. The HDMI works, but it is a 720p. I like the 900 vertical res better.

One line caught my eye .. Don't know if that would be important for X to apply that ModeLine.

You should probably pay attention to the two lines above it then, especially the warning one.

djwave28, currently no idea how to approach the problem further.
but there is still the problem of attaching the monitor section
to the proper device port:
Code:
[    54.400] (II) RADEON(0): Output DisplayPort-0 using monitor section Monitor0
...
[    54.502] (II) RADEON(0): EDID for output DVI-1
[    54.502] (II) RADEON(0): Printing probed modes for output DVI-1
[    54.502] (II) RADEON(0): Modeline "1024x768"x60.0   65.00  1024 1048 1184 1344  768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (48.4 kHz e)
...
[    54.502] (II) RADEON(0): Output DVI-1 connected
...
[    54.602] (WW) RADEON(0): Option "DVI-1" is not used

edit:
haven't found anything about the internal device port names for
the radeon driver yet, but found an example for the intel driver
try the following line in the device section as a replacement
Code:
        Option          "Monitor-DVI-1" "Monitor0"

Still got a tons of "challenges" though ... haha .. Good for filling up the forum some more and learn along the way. You will see me back somewhere along the way.
At least I got it up without the annoyance of the resolution and the confidence you put into it.
