I've got gentoo installed on my new x1 carbon and have only minor
issues

one is that the LEDs for audio MUTE and mic MUTE do not light up
(the buttons work, i.e. give acpi_listen events and audio mute actually
mutes sound)

I'm not sure how to work on this (I've followed various suggestions on
the internet to no avail)

I think a big HINT however is that the LEDs work perfectly in ubuntu 16.04
(which I dual boot with gentoo)

I am running kernel 4.6rc6 (needed to solve the intel pstate issue with skylake)

ubuntu is a 4.4 kernel

my desktop environment is kde 5.6 / plasma 5 and qt 5.6

I can control some LEDs with the /proc/acpi/ibm or /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi links
(the FnLk LED and the power button LED)

Code:
Here is the ls of /sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acp/leds
tpacpi::bay_active   tpacpi::dock_status1  tpacpi::kbd_backlight  tpacpi::standby       tpacpi::unknown_led
tpacpi::dock_active  tpacpi::dock_status2  tpacpi:orange:batt     tpacpi::thinklight    tpacpi::unknown_led2
tpacpi::dock_batt    tpacpi:green:batt     tpacpi::power          tpacpi::thinkvantage  tpacpi::unknown_led3

note that no micmute or audiomute appears (but they don't appear in ubuntu either so the LEDs are
controlled somewhere else I think ... )

the "unknown led"s don't do anything when toggled on/off

Maybe someone has a clue about this; I don't :)
