Hi,

I just reinstalled gentoo on my machine and had fairly long problems getting it to boot into the new system because of a kernel panic. The last lines of the output can be seen here: http://imgur.com/aSYvBr3

The problem I figured was a plugged in beaglebone gadget, but as it seems any USB device tampers with the device assignment. As can be seen in the picture, /dev/sdb (formerly /dev/sda of course) is the actual hard disk I want to boot from. I tried both variations of grub and lilo with the same effect, even when specifying boot=/dev/disk/by-uuid/xxxx it actually did not work yet. As far as I understand it is udev that is responsible for the assignment and the rules should keep a hard drive in front, right? The same effect occurs on another machine when I plug in an external hard drive, here too the hard drive gets assigned to /dev/sda and the kernel panics.

I am just a little lost how to handle that now as test cycles take rather long. Does anyone have an advice?

I believe it will work if you use PARTUUID instead of UUID. BTW, panic occurs when kernel wants to mount /, so there is no udev in play yet.

Thanks, I will try that and post the status. I thought UUID was >the< solution... I should read more on that this evening.

With PARTUUID it worked, thanks!

Code:
append="root=PARTUUID=6a482919-02 init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd"
