I'm planning to migrate my Gentoo Linux system from 32-bit to 64-bit. By migrate I mean I'm going to do a fresh Gentoo AMD64 install along side my existing 32-bit install (the same one I've been keeping up-to-date since circa 2001 :) ), and then go from there.

Along with this I'm going to replace my LVM volumes with btrfs subvolumes. For simplicity's sake, let's say I have the 32-bit Gentoo installed into two subvolumes:

  • root -> /
  • home -> /home

My plan is then to create a new root subvolume and install the Gentoo AMD64 there:

  • root -> / (for 32-bit)
  • root64 -> / (for 64-bit)
  • home -> /home

The /boot would remain the same; an ext4 partition. What I'm uncertain about is whether the kernel architecture (32-bit vs 64-bit) has an effect on the btrfs filesystem; such as how the data is laid out. Is it possible to use the same btrfs filesystem (not the same root subvolume of course) with 32-bit and 64-bit Gentoo Linux OSs?

Note: This is a stop-gap while I migrate toward the 64-bit system.

It's completely safe. The only dangerous thing you could possibly do to break it is dual-booting something with an ancient kernel and buggy btrfs code.
