Hello All

I have setup Gentoo with XFCE, all ticking along nicely.

However, for times when I wish to experiment with a stripped down system (TWM) I've disabled DBUS as a service and re-emerged packages for which I don't feel DBUS is particularly necessary (such as Firefox and Libreoffice).

My .xinitrc starts up DBUS before launching XFCE, but when launching TWM I don't bother.

The problem is, when launching Firefox (now emerged with '-dbus'), DBUS magically appears in my process list, but I don't want it to.

Any ideas why this might be? It seems very intrusive.

This may can help you: https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7447848.html#7447848

Whatever, if dbus-daemon is installed, this always run because this daemon is setting in rc-update daemon list, rid off from this lists, remerge your system using -dbus in your global USE, reboot your system and check again.

Hey YukiteruAmano, thanks for replying.

Yeah I have another laptop with -dbus in the use flags, but I still ended up installing it for occasional dropbox use. On that laptop though, dbus only launches when dropbox launches - and this makes sense since it's a requirement (and as I don't run dropbox very often this is no issue really).

On this other laptop though, the one in question, dbus still starts with Firefox even though I have compiled it out of the package and all it's dependencies. Weird. I'll try it with Midori over the weekend. I would like to preserve the RAM used by dbus on occasions when I need as much RAM as possible (e.g. music or video editing), hence my requirement.

I checked your link, good to know I'm not the only one would like to untangle from this dependency. :)

As ever, regards to the community
