I've downloaded the iso "livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160514.iso" and tried to load under VirtualBox 5.0.20 r106931.

I've got the following message (some parts pt-BR):

Quote:
Could not get the storage format of the medium 'D:\livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160514.iso' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).

Código de Resultado:
VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005)
Componente:

Interface:
IMedium {4afe423b-43e0-e9d0-82e8-ceb307940dda}
Chamador:
IVirtualBox {0169423f-46b4-cde9-91af-1e9d5b6cd945}
RC do Chamador:
VBOX_E_OBJECT_NOT_FOUND (0x80BB0001)

I've checked the sha256, tried to load with 7zip and its ok.

Any suggestions of what I can do?

Hello guiwp,

Aren't you trying to load it as a VirtualBox image? You should use the VB's option for disk devices and then point the virtual DVD drive to your image.

What I actually did was exactly this: Configurações > Armazenamento > Controladora: IDE > Acrescentar Disco Óptico > Escolher disco > livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160514.iso

Then...

Could not get the storage format of the medium 'D:\livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160514.iso' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED). [...]

I do this for Debian images and it works right...

What's the Guest OS type you are using in VirtualBox?

I have good and bad news for you.

The good news is that the problem is not with your system, as I reproduced the issue in my computer...

The bad news is that I do not know how to make it work.

But don't despair. You can use any linux live CD/DVD to install Gentoo. The minimal install CD works too, as I have used it a week or so ago to install Gentoo into another VirtualBox VM.

That was the second time I download this iso and reinstall VB to make sure that really was something wrong with my installation setup before going to the forum, but as you said, it wasn't my system. Well, as I was going to install at my home computer I think I can wait! Lets see what they do!

Last time I used Gentoo was in 2008-2009, I just wanted known how was this "guy" today =)

Thank you @pilla, I think can play with minimal installations.

Perfect, guiwp. I can also tell that I was able to boot that live DVD on my Macbook air, so it looks like it is some small compatibility issue between it and VirtualBox.

I can confirm that I am experiencing the same issue with Gentoo Choice Edition as my guest VM in VirtualBox. When I go to select start up disk, VirtualBox doesn't recognize the iso. I get a "Failed to open the disk image file" with:
Code:
Could not get the storage format of the medium '/media/gnull/data/data/operating systems/livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160514.iso' (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED).
Result Code:

My host is Ubuntu 16.04.

Same problem here with the 2016 LiveDVD and VirtualBox.

I remember not being able to use the 2011 LiveDVD in VirtualBox too, but got around it by using QEMU-KVM:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-6609819.html#6609819

I wonder if something similar would be possible with the 2016 LiveDVD?

I have several ISO's VBox is refusing to load. Not that I care much abut VBox, but this probably is worth opening a bug.

I had the same issue where livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160514.iso couldn't be mounted to guest with already mentioned error.

Bug LiveDVD Choice Edition livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160514.iso can't be mounted to virtualbox guest was submited.

For the meanwhile, latest release available at http://releases.gentooligans.com/ (livedvd-amd64-multilib-20160617.iso) works as expected.
