I have a problem that developed after a failed emerge. I have /Desktop/Plasma as my profile and have been building things from X to KDE. Installing the required packages and USE flags as required.

I was able to work through most of the obstacles, but an ongoing issue I after a failed emerge is that I have scrolling text on every screen I try to open, and it makes it impossible to edit a config file.

Here are a couple of screen shots taken with my phone:

Here is my login prompt:

And here is after I type in my username:

I know I have something borked, maybe a log file?

Thanks,

JD

john_deaux ...

That you get messages on the console sounds very much like no syslog daemon is running.

best ... khay

Hi Khay,

I emerged and added syslog-ng to default in rc-update and this is in my /etc/portage/make.conf regarding the logger:

Code:
PORT_LOGGER="/var/log/portage"
PORTAGE_ELOG_CLASSES="log warn error"
PORTAGE_ELOG_SYSTEM="save"

I wish I would've added the email option at setup.

Cheers!

JD

I believe the issue is resolved.

I noticed all of the messages that I was getting bombarded with had PAM in the title. I remember putting PAM in "use" before I installed ConsoleKit as a prerequisite for KDE/Plasma 5.

I booted into the rescue cd and changed make.conf to -pam and unmerged sys-libs/pam. I ran a couple of updates, depclean, and I was now able to access my build with no issues.

Will try to reinstall it in a bit and see what happens.

Do you still happen to have that make.conf file, or at least the list of USE-flags you had enabled?

Reinstalling before finding out the actual cause is a good way of getting rid of a problem, and repeating it. ^^

I've seen an issue like this before, and it makes me think of USE=debug, though I forget what package would have this effect with it. I want to say having it enabled for sys-libs/pam indeed would make it happen, but I really can't remember... and if the package was removed completely, it would not be the only culprit.

I wonder if I'm thinking of a kernel configuration option after all.
