Hi everyone...

I just got a ssd drive.. Corsair LE 240gig... TRIM=BLOCK 8

I was just wondering if there is anything I should know about installing Gentoo to a SSD drive.. I have read some stuff on it and being a newbie to Linux and Gentoo .. I am lost as to all this stuff....

question are like this ..

Should I build a complete new Gentoo system
can I copy my old system to the drive..
is my ssd not going to last or is this a complete waste of time...
Is there a good walk-thru for installing Gentoo to a drive
I will probably keep my mechanical drive in the system as well
I want to make the ssd the boot drive.. but mechanical drive is /sda and the ssd is /sdb
can I build the system in this configuration then change the sata cables around to make ssd sda and the mechanical sdb

thanks in advance
Mike Dennison

cowboy0629,

Your SSD will be fine. You can do all of the things you suggest.

If you have the RAM and are worried about writes, put /var/tmp/portage into tmpfs.
4G of installed RAM will give you a 2G tmpfs which is adequate for most packages if you only build them one at a time.
Things like firefox and libreoffice won't fit but you can move PORTAGE_TMPDIR on a per package basis for those packages.
