Question: is genkernel something to be ashamed off in contrast to a custom fit kernel?

Only if you think it is.
Use what you feel easiest and fastest; bonus points if you understand what it does.

Use whatever gets the job done. Genkernel is a tool, I don't see where shame comes into it - if you need it, and it works for you - use it.

If you want to subsequently build a custom kernel you can then at least learn it at your leisure secure in the knowledge that you have a working kernel to boot back into if it all goes pear-shaped.
