I a new to Gentoo and following the AMD64 handbook. The network did not work automagically. :(

So I am now running net-setup. It asks if I enter my WEP in HEX or ASCII. How do I know what to answer? I doubt if I am on the right track because the network has WAP-PSK protection.

I tried both options. And my suspission is correct. It works for WEP not my type of encryption. :(

Reading on the configuring network wiki:
ls /lib/modules/`uname -r`/kernel/drivers/net gives the content of a directory (drivers for network devices I think?
Look into that to see anything with "ath" in it. Then I see in a subfolder .../wireless/ath 7 files. One gray (ath.ko) and 6 blue.

To find out which modules have been loaded I execute the following command:
Code:
lspci -k | grep ath
Kernel driver in use: ath9k
Kernel modules: ath9k

I saw somewhere that it was an Atheros-card. So looking around in dmesg:
Code:
dmesg | grep Ath
[    ]  Atheros (R) L2 Ethernet Driver - version 2.2.3
[    ]  ieee80211 phy0: Atheros AR9280 Rev:2 mem 0xffffc90001700000, irq 18

I typed al the output in by hand since I am not that good in mounting and unmounting an usb stick in gentoo (yet).

The ouput of ifconfig:
Code:
ifconfig
wlp24s0: flags=4099<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx txqueuelen 1000 (Ethernet)
RX packets 0 bytes 0 (0.0 B)
...

The dots stand for text about RX and TX with all values are 0. So it did not communicate.

While reading on it seems my wireless card is detected because of the output of ifconfig for wlp24s0.

^%&^%^&%why didn't I see that sooner?

So reading on in Prepairing for wireless

output of the commands:
Code:
iwconfig wlp24s0
wlp24s0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any
Mode:managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-power= 0 dBm
Retry short limit: 7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key: off
Power Management:off

I think I have to connect to the Access Point (AP) because the example shows an IP address...

Code:
iwconfig eth0 essid GentooNode

I replace GentooNode with the ESSID of my network and the command iwconfig wlp24s0 now shows the ESSID I entered. :)
The rest is the same.

I can read on [code=https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Networking/Wireless]here[/code].

edit: changed last line to add the link to where I am reading.

Thank you for the warning, fedeliallalinea.

Learned:
1. Arch wiki suits me better;
2. Wireless is still (very) hard.

I don't know how to close this post correctly. Any suggestions?
