Hi all,

After seeing this lovely 7.6W post on reddit, I checked out my power usage. Currently thinkpad_acpi, the driver to thinkpad specific features, is consuming a strange amount of power! 6.10W / 6.61W in this image example

The next power hungry thing is the bluetooth usb device, which I have just disabled in the kernel. However that is a difference of at least an order of magnitude!

Why is thinkpad_acpi consuming so much power? Additionally, how can I troubleshoot what is going on/wrong?

Per, thinkpad_acpi only adds access to:

  • Fn key combinations
  • Bluetooth enable and disable
  • video output switching, expansion control
  • ThinkLight on and off
  • CMOS/UCMS control
  • LED control
  • ACPI sounds
  • temperature sensors
  • Experimental: embedded controller register dump
  • LCD brightness control
  • Volume control
  • Fan control and monitoring: fan speed, fan enable/disable
  • WAN enable and disable
  • UWB enable and disable

I see no reason why any of those would cause ~6W of power use...

Notably, my battery life took a large drop recently. My suspicion is that when I did recent emerge --sync and then package update, something was different after recompilation. However I am not sure how to troubleshoot that. My current approach is figure out why thinkpad_acpi is consuming so much more power, and then figure out what package changed caused it.

Any help you guys could provide would be fantastic!

I find that powertop is very inaccurate about particular device
power usage FWIW
.... there is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth
doing as simply messing about with Linux ...
(apologies to Kenneth Graeme)
