Hi,

at work we're running our virtual machines on a Xen Server. I have installed a couple of gentoo based virtual machines and they work just fine.

Now I'm trying to integrate the VMs tighter with the Xen Server. The Windows-based management GUI tells me that the guest tools are not installed. While I have all kernel options that mention "xen" turned on it does not seem to be enough. Installing the xen guest tools made the error message disappear on debian based VMs. However if I install the guest tools on my Gentoo VM I still get the error message. I used the approach scripted in https://bitbucket.org/pepoluan/install-xe-guest-utilities-for-gentoo/wiki/Home to install the guest tools.

The xe-daemon process is running but the error message remains for my Gentoo VM. Does anyone know what else I could try?

Hi dr.nil,

Does your Xen Server support a (privileged) dom0 that is also gentoo, in addition to the "gentoo VMs" you are trying to integrate better? If not, what is your dom0 environment?

Cheers

Our Dom0 environment is ... well, a XenServer :-) Maybe this download page helps: http://xenserver.org/overview-xenserver-open-source-virtualization/download.html Looks like it's a specialized distribution (based on what?)

Does it make any difference what the dom0 is? All Debian based domU machines can install and run the guest tools provided by the xen server just fine. Only my gentoo domU machines don't ...
