If your console/X-terminal is in chaos, like
 ⚫ "less" command complains "WARNING: terminal is not fully functional"
 ⚫ backspace doesn't work (Thanks eccerr0r for pointing out.)
Then ncurses is somehow broken. Try
$ emerge --oneshot sys-libs/ncurses:0

Recently (Dec 2016?) there's a bug in slotmove and some users (incl. me of course ;-) experienced wrong removal of ncurses:0 by autoclean. See links below. [1] (Slotmove is defined in <portage tree>/profiles/updates/* In this case the culprit was 3Q-2015.)

Of course (so-)libraries are preserved, but /usr/share/terminfo/ gets lost, resulting in less and other programs that can't operate.

If you have seen other hazardous symptoms, please let us know.

I think this is related to https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1026564.html .

Another symptom I saw after it erroneously unmerges ncurses, backspace stopped working my gnome-terminals, etc. Chaos ensued.

Re-emerging the old ncurses solved the problem for me, and I suppose it could have been easier to remerge ncurses:0 instead of hunting for a valid version that wouldn't cause even more issues.

Hopefully the portage update means nobody will see this anymore...
