If you want to have your Gentoo system up and running in minutes on your X31 without using an external USB drive I have a solution.
Download Knoppix, boot another machine on the network using it and then start the terminal service :
Code: | /etc/init.d/knoppix-terminalserver start |
Then boot your laptop using the network card. (It will use PXE to boot)
It should work ! (It worked for me and for a friend)

By the way, can Gentoo detect other hardware of X31 correctly? e.g. sound card, video card, LAN network card, wireless network card...... |

yes it does
i had no problem with kernel 2.6.5-mm6 ... but i'm fighting with the thinkpad module. because that version that is in portage (4.3) i had to manually download the newest 5.x version to support 2.6.
take a look at http://tpctl.sourceforge.net/tpctlhome.htm
wireless works (i have an atheros chip, 802.11a/b/g) with the madwifi driver...
so other things like sound, display and the intel e1000 nic don't make any problems.. |

This tip is really awsome. Knoppix wouldn't boot from my usb drive because the knoppix kernel doesn't have usb builtin to it. The PXE boot works like a charm. |
